History of Department

Department of Physics of Thin Films - one of the three departments, on the base of which the Institute of Magnetism was founded in September 1995.
The Department was established in 1962 on the base of the Laboratory of Film Physics, which was an integral part of the Alloys Technology Department of the Institute of Metal Physics. Initially the Department was headed by Prof. A.G. Lesnik. Since 1984 it has been headed by Prof. A.M. Pogorily.
The scientists of the Department have been engaged in studying magnetic, electric and optical properties of metallic and insulating films, investigation of dependence of the film properties on the processing technology conditions, crystalline structure imperfections, magnetic structure and dimensional effects. External influences on the electron properties of the films as well as the behaviour of layered compositions in alternating magnetic and electric fields have been intensively investigated. Much attention have been paid to study of interlayer, interatomic and superfine interactions in ultrathin layered and modulated films. A film deposition technology has been developed to provide materials for magnetic recording electronics and optical storage of information.

The scientists of Department of Physics of Thin Films were awarded by the following prizes and awards:

Pulyuia Ukrainian Academy of Sciences Prize:
.. (2008).

Ukraine State Prize:
Lesnik A.G., Pogoriliy A.M. (1985).

Sinel’nikov Ukrainian Academy of Sciences Prize:
Lesnik A.G. (1978).
